How much do tooth crowns cost?

There is no “one” cost for tooth crowns. Your treatment will vary depending on the material used for your crown, the location and state of the affected tooth, and any additional treatments which could be required (such as root canal therapy or fillings). Usually, you can expect a tooth crown to cost anywhere from $400-$2,500. Fortunately, for those patients with dental insurance or dental savings plans, a tooth crown is typically covered in-part or in-full by many insurance or savings plans.

What are crowns made of?

Many modern dental crowns are fabricated from medical-strength ceramic porcelain, a natural-looking, hardy material that can be custom tinted to match your natural enamel’s color. Porcelain is similar to enamel in many ways, from its strong and durable surface, to its smooth, glossy appearance. However, unlike enamel, porcelain’s non-porous surface means it resists food and drinks stains. In addition, porcelain does not decay from harmful oral bacteria emissions like natural enamel does. In these ways, porcelain is even easier to maintain than natural enamel!

While other materials are also used for crowns, including some metals, porcelain fused to metals, and zirconia, porcelain provides the most aesthetic results.

The cost for these different crown materials is different; depending on your financial abilities, smile goals, and aesthetic desires, Dr. Rodgers can help you select the best crown for your smile.

What should I expect?

Once Dr. Rodgers has determined a tooth crown is the best treatment for you, he will take impressions, x-rays, and possibly photo images to aid in the fabrication of the tooth crown. These steps ensure that your custom crown created in a dental laboratory, fits your mouth perfectly. (Note: patients who are receiving a crown as part of treatment for a lost tooth will first need to undergo and recover from dental implant surgery, which may take several months).

Before the procedure begins, local anesthetic will be administered to provide increased comfort. Additional sedative medications may also be provided for patients who may be anxious or fearful of restorative treatments. Dr. Rodgers will then carefully prep the tooth, removing any present decay and shaping the natural crown so the restorative crowns fits securely over the tooth. A temporary crown made from a resin-based material may be placed until the final crown is completed.

When your final crown is ready, Dr. Rodgers will ensure it fits comfortably before using permanent dental adhesive to bond it to the reshaped tooth.  Once secured in place, you can enjoy restored functionality and a natural, seamless-looking smile. Your restored tooth can stay healthy and functions for years with regular brushing, flossing, and dental exams.

How long will the tooth crown last?

A crown’s durability depends largely on what it is made of, but for the most part, dental crowns should last about eight to ten years, or even up to 15 years in some instances.
